Tollingtons Fish Bar, Finsbury Park

“We can do this!” I said, trying to encourage Sumit with determination as we made our way to Tollingtons — our second dinner of the night. And honestly? I was just as excited as I was at the first spot.

Just a 15-minute walk from The Plimsoll, Four Legs has transformed a beloved old fish and chip shop into a seafood bar with Spanish influence. They’ve kept much of the original charm, though. Think: balmy evening at a pintxos bar with counter seating and a standing area that feels like it’s by the beach… when really, it's on a high street, and the kitchen heat makes it feel very balmy indeed.

Instead of sangria, you’ll find a lovely selection of vermouth and wine — which, sadly, I still haven’t learned to appreciate (one day…).

Despite being about 50% full, my excitement shot up when a plate of sliced baguette hit the counter. So, let’s get into it.

Squid a la Plancha was the perfect opener — fresh, beautifully grilled with garlic, olive oil, and parsley. It was tender inside, surprisingly crisp outside, and just plain stunning.

Grace Dent didn’t lie. The Chip Bravas were the best chips I’ve had in ages. Hot, fresh, fat little chunks of joy — crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, drenched in that silky, punchy bravas sauce and aioli. A perfect plate of fried potatoes, no notes.

The Potato Omelette was lovely — silky, mellow, packed with potato slices and onions. A good sharing dish, but if I’m honest, it wasn’t necessary (or maybe I was just hitting my limit at this point).

I also liked the Cockles with Coriander and White Wine, however... some were a little raw, which could be off-putting for some. (Luckily, I survived!) The wine did overpower the cockles a bit, so it wasn’t my favourite — not bad, just not a standout.

By now, I seriously underestimated how many potatoes I'd eaten. I wasn’t sure I could handle a Bifana — their take on a Portuguese baguette sandwich filled with marinated pork, served with French mustard and fermented chilli on the side.
And thank goodness — It was a great treat. The meat was smoky and slightly sweet, the baguette soaked up all the delicious meat juices, and once slathered with mustard and chilli, it was on another level. I need more bifana in my life.

I love the vibe and the energy of the space, but be warned — it gets boiling in there. So choose your outfit wisely. It’s a great date spot or a fun dinner with the girls. You can book for up to four people with table seating, but honestly? Why sit quietly at the back when you can be right in the thick of the action, watching the kitchen do its magic?

Although we couldn't hack the dessert part (I will be back for you, Caramel Flan!) We did have an ice-cold glass bottle of Pepsi to wash down all the oil and garlic we consumed, so it's good enough for us!
Would I go back?
A. BIG. FAT. YES.
Especially for those chip bravas.
