Ramen, Sushi & A Catch-Up in Putney – Dining at Tsuki Ramen

"I’m in the mood for ramen and sushi. Are you up for it?"
"Let’s do it! I also have your Tupperware and dish from the potluck!"

And just like that, dear reader, is how to set a meet-up in motion. I met up with Eva for dinner at Tsuki Ramen, a charming little Japanese spot tucked away in Putney. Fun fact: I’d never actually been to Putney before, so having a little wander before dinner felt like a great pre-meal adventure.

Let’s talk about Tsuki Ramen – a cosy, minimalist gem that serves up comforting bowls of tonkotsu ramen, fresh sushi, grilled kushiyaki, and a solid selection of sake. The interior is simple and clean with wooden furniture and a bold Japanese statement wall that instantly sets the tone. You’re either transported to Japan or, at the very least, reminded that you're at a restaurant for Japanese food.

It was a warm day, but I still found comfort in holding a cup of tea as we browsed the menu. Here's what we ordered (and shared, of course):

🍜 Tonkotsu Ramen
We couldn’t pass up their signature bowl. A generous nest of ramen noodles swimming in a thick, creamy broth, topped with two slices of chargrilled char siu, bamboo shoots, woodear mushrooms, a perfectly soft ramen egg, shredded spring onions, and a sheet of seaweed. The noodles were springy and satisfying. While the broth leaned more mushroomy than porky, making it lighter than expected, it was still flavourful. The pork was tender, and everything else hit the right notes. A solid bowl I’d happily order again.

🍣 Sushi Rolls
Between the salmon & avocado and the prawn tempura & avocado rolls, the latter won me over. However, the rice was under-seasoned, which made the flavours fall a little flat. I wish I'd asked for some Kewpie mayo to give it a flavour boost!

🔥 Kushiyaki Set - Yuzu Honey Chicken Wings, Teriyaki chicken thigh, Ibérico Pork, Leek & Salted Beef
A mixed experience here. Some skewers were a bit too chewy and required more effort to bite through. But the standout? The yuzu honey chicken wings – juicy, tender, and bursting with citrusy yet smoky flavours.

🐟 Sashimi Deluxe Don
Fresh sashimi, that's a good start. But again, the rice lacked seasoning, which made the dish feel a little incomplete. A small tweak that could’ve elevated the whole bowl.

🥬 Sides: Pickled Daikon & Spinach Balls
Surprisingly refreshing and much-needed greens! These were perfect palate cleansers and honestly? I’d order them again. Maybe I’m getting older... or just wiser about vegetables.

🍵 Desserts: Cream Puff vs Ice Cream Mochi
The cream puffs were for me – the slightly warmed shell filled with cool matcha cream was dreamy. The Little Moons ice cream mochi were tasty too (as expected), but the cream puff stole the spotlight.

The staff were incredibly attentive and kind, which added to the overall welcoming vibe. Tsuki Ramen is still relatively new, and their menu has grown beyond what’s currently listed on their website – hopefully, an update is coming soon!

So, if you find yourself in Putney and craving Japanese food, Tsuki Ramen is well worth a visit. It’s casual, cosy, and delivers on comfort food with friendly service. Plus, a sushi and ramen combination is always a good idea.
